The owners of 1859 Alta View launched the process of creating their sustainable, resilient and thriving-in-place dwelling with the careful selection of the perfect site. Their location choice is part of an established neighborhood adjacent to a heavily wooded park. Their home is also within a short walking distance to their community’s downtown, grocery stores, and restaurants.
The home’s construction exceeded structural, energy, fire and accessibility codes in order to provide the owners with the comfort of a resilient structure to withstand heavy winds, fires, earthquakes and the challenges that may accompany aging. Views from the home to the surrounding landscape facilitate rejuvenation and inspiration from nature. The LEED Platinum-Certified home was built for an exceptionally low price as a custom dwelling on hillside land.
Cost reducing strategies included:
- a compact design with minimal hallways, open living spaces, and stacked stairs
- a narrow home for simple structural spans and reduced foundation costs
- a simple shed roof to avoid valleys and ridges
- a distributed 4-zone ductless HVAC system
- an open-web floor trusses to facilitate the ease of plumbing, electrical and HRV installation
The Alta View Residence was recognized by Oregon Home Magazine as their custom Home of the Year in 2018, and was the recipient of the National Association of Home Builder’s “Best of American Living Award”
